Readers write

"Newspapers must, first and foremost, display a commitment to their community and to quality journalism. This is especially true in a small market like Monterey County, where newspapers play a vital role as watchdog for the public interest. They are more than a business -- they are a public trust. It's absolutely vital that any potential buyer for the Herald share and embrace these values."

Ken Peterson
Senior Public Relations Manager, Monterey Bay Aquarium

"For decades, The Herald has been the primary community conduit for news and opinions in Monterey County. That vital link must be preserved as a local entity if this county expects to grow and prosper."

Fred Hernandez,
Former assistant features editor at The Herald
& Founding Director of
First Night Monterey

:"It breaks my heart to see the Herald go through this disruption once again. I wish all Herald employees and the residents of Monterey County a happy outcome for this great community asset. Good luck to you all."

Reg Henry,
former editor of The Herald (1988-93), now deputy editorial page editor of the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
and nationally distributed columnist, Pittsburgh, Pa

"For more than 60 years, The Herald's staff has reported community news to our family, making it possible for us to be good citizens who can form sound judgments about what matters in the city of Monterey, the county of Monterey and the state of California. Since we look to The Herald's staff to provide leadership, shouldn't we all help the staff to share ownership of The Herald?"

Edie Karas
Retired MPC
English professor

"The Herald gives a a very good mix of opinion and news from our world, local to worldwide."

Ken Morley,

Pacific Grove

"We expect what the Herald delivers - news about our communities, written by professional journalists who live here and care about what happens."

Betsy Buchalter Adler, Pacific Grove

"The Herald has served this community well thanks to the high standards and ability of its’ employees. Let’s hope the future owner will continue this tradition and ensure that this talented staff in retained."

Lisa Hoivik, Community volunteer, Monterey

The Herald just plain delivers!

Barbara Grant,
Pacific Grove

"Locally rooted newspapers like the Monterey Herald are the life-blood of civic life in our communities. It is my hope that this transition will lead to a Monterey Herald that is more engaged, not less engaged in the whole of Monterey County. Because this county is wrestling with explosive policy issues that affect both rural and coastal California, such an expansion of engagement, vision and voice would permit the Herald to provide real leadership in California."

Paul Johnston,
Santa Cruz

"I am a life-long resident and do not want to see the Herald become a vehicle for big money, developers and one-sided opinions."

Ms. Lowell March, Pacific Grove

"A healthy newspaper is vital for keeping our community strong."

Kathy Whilden,
Monterey

"the strength of the Herald has always been the employees!"

Helen Baird Rose,
Carmel

It would be a tragedy for the Herald to stop being a community newspaper. Profits should not come before the best interests of Monterey County residents. When will the news stop being a commodity and return to being a community service?

Cynthia Bage, Salinas

Community Statement

We, readers and residents of Monterey County, are concerned about the future of the Herald.

We do not want the sale of the Herald to lead to a smaller, less ambitious newspaper.

Without an experienced news-gathering and advertising sales staff, the quality of the newspaper’s coverage and effectiveness as an advertising tool would be diminished.

Without vibrant, in-depth reporting of our area, residents and workers will not be as well- informed or have the information they need to engage fully in civic life.

Without a civic-minded owner, many civic, cultural and charitable groups could lose a major financial supporter.

We encourage all potential new owners of the Monterey County Herald to preserve its excellence and learn of our community's expectations for its daily newspaper.
